It is a toxic bi-product of a destroyed civilization when men have to revert to pursuing the women for spouses. It wasn't really the norm in a healthy Christian society. In fact it was illegal for anyone to marry who were not of the masters level of their profession, no boys. At the peak of health of a nation, that's how it was.

Only the women sought out the best candidate, of course with help of family and estate representatives. It was mainly for the firstborn heirs who achieved a masters level in their trade who were considered as having capacity to raise up the family name of the next generation. These also had to have a debt free estate (estate meant having a lot of employees working there at his complete household).
These were minimal things for considering someone to be of marriage quality.
It was highly illegal to counteract such development. Only a country dominated by foreign enemies would ever discourage any of this. Peace through strength.
In many countries of Western civilization it would be illegal for any one to marry if they did not have such status.

Now that communism has basically made estate ownership and inheritance illegal, the enslaved debt situation is now what most are brainwashed to serve. With that are a lot of fake impossible hollywood lies that could never be satisfied. As it says in hundreds of Bible verses that the flesh cannot be satisfied and can only be crucified or it will destroy all the above. This is why the only nations that became rich had local Christian teachers and priests teaching Jesus and His Nationalist laws thoroughly.
As they took Jesus out of the equation the rest fell. So today we see slaves doing the opposite of what a healthy society does. Now men are being the girls in order to perhaps claw their way into some false schemes of the debt system,
all of it being only more chains of debt-slavery to destroy the people completely (as Ben Franklin and so many other warned).

There was a day when all marriages were arranged, and it was beautiful. Don't settle.
